On Thursday, FC Gifu announced the return of former manager Hideki Matsunaga to the club. Matsunaga was at the helm as Gifu ascended from the JFL to the J.League and as such he is still very highly regarded by the club and it’s supporters. Matsunaga takes the position of general manager responsible for the football side of things.
Matsunaga is vastly experienced in Japanese football. In addition to the Gifu job he has manager jobs at Verdy Kawasaki, Ventforet Kofu and Vissel Kobe as well as coaching stints at Shimizu S-Pulse and Gamba Osaka. For the last 3 years he has been at Nagoya Grampus as technical director. In that time he worked with coach Dragan Stoijkovic in assembling a pretty good team and extending Grampus’ scouting network both at home and abroad.
The general manager position is a pretty vague classification, but it is clear that he will be focussed on the football side of the club as Gifu have already appointed a different general manager for the administration/business side. It is a great boost to get someone who not only knows the club so well, but also has such a vast knowledge and a, presumably, large list of contacts.
