The squad for the 2013 J2 season was officially announced yesterday, along with the squad numbers for the forthcoming season….well almost. As you will see, there is no number 9 on the list. Does that mean someone else is preparing to come in soon?

The list in full:

1    Takahiro TAKAGI   (new signing from Consadole Sapporo)
21  Gakuji OTA   (new signing from Osaka Gakuin University)
31  Shogo TOKIHISA

Defenders
2     Arata SUGIYAMA  (new signing from Yokohama FC)
3     DESMOND N’Ze Kouassi  (on loan from Fujieda MYFC)
4     Shuto TANAKA
5     Hiroshi SEKITA
17   Shun NOGAITO
20   Tatsuya ARAI  (new signing from Nagoya Grampus)
23   Hirofumi MORIYASU
24 Daiki OIZUMI

Midfielders
6   Toshihiro HATTORI
7   Hidemi JINUSHIZONO
8   RI Han Jae
10  Atsushi MIO  (new signing from Gainare Tottori)
11  Kazuki SOMEYA
15  Masato YAMAZAKI   (new signing from Kashiwa Reysol)
16  Matazou HIRANO  (new signing from Japan Sports Science University)
19  Tsukasa MASUYAMA  (new signing from JEF United)
25  Takumi KIYOMOTO (new signing from Feyenoord)

Forwards
14 Taira INOUE
18 Hiroyuki SUGIMOTO  (new signing from Thespa Kusatsu Gunma)
26 Kohei NAKASHIMA

So, no number 9. And there is also a lack of out and out forwards. Only three in the squad might seem a severe, but it would indicate that Gifu will once again be going with a 4-5-1/4-2-3-1 formation. In that case, as with last season, Kazuki Someya will be asked to provide a spark from the left side.

One very interesting addition to the squad is that of Takumi Kiyomoto. He is only 19 years old, but has spent the last year or so in Holland with Excelsior & Feyenoord. It isn’t your typical route into Japanese football and coupled with fact that he is a Gifu native he has created a little bit of buzz around the team. He is an attacking player, so it will be interesting to see if and how he is deployed in the team. The first hints we will get is from FC Gifu’s pre-season camp which is being held in the beautiful hot-spring resort of Beppu, Oita prefecture.
