Emperor’s Cup draw

Gifu have been given a very tough draw in the opening round of the Emperor’s Cup (天皇杯 in Japanese).

Gifu must travel to Fagiano Okayama in their opening tie. At the time of writing, Fagiano haven’t lost at home since July 2012 – a run of 15 games. They have a potent strike force of Tomoyuki Arata and ex-Gifu loanee Yuki Oshitani and boast one of the best goalkeepers in J2 in Hirotsugu Nakabayashi.

If Gifu somehow mange to win that one, they will go on to face Kashiwa Reysol, assuming Cleo, Wagner, Kudo and company can get past a prefectural representative first.

Why we always end up having to play another j2 team is beyond me. The cup has so much potential but shitty draws and home advantage to the top teams really kills it a bit.

Despite all that I’m hoping that Gifu can surprise Okayama and following a win against Reysol, I can pop my Kashima cherry and go to watch Gifu play the Antlers in October!
Although I will settle for Gifu to remain in the j2 in 2014 instead of this if need be!
