On Monday, a Gifu team made up of fringe squad members and some trialists played a training game at the cutely named Yoro Smile Ground against Tokai Gakuen University from Aichi prefecture.

The game was split into three thirds of thirty minutes and Gifu ended up winning the game 6-0. Full credit to the players as the temperature went up to 37 degrees, it must have been really draining to play in that kind of heat.

One thing of note from the game was that Hiroyuki Sugimoto lined up in defence at the start. This chimes with other reports of him not being used as a forward (I assumed forward was his preferred position) even in training and training games. I wonder why? Whenever I’ve seen him play, which is not often, he has looked OK. Nothing ground breaking, but nothing terrible. It is a little bit strange.
