This weekend, Gifu will play their first home J.League match for a long time (if ever?) outside of Gifu city when they entertain Gainare Tottori on Sunday afternoon.
The Asanaka Stadium is located in Ogaki city, to the west of Gifu city. To get there by public transport, fans need to take the Tokaido Line to Ogaki before transfering to the Yoro Tetsudo line, getting off at Otoba station.
Gifu have played games there when they were in the JFL. The last game was a 1-0 win against FC Ryukyu there. The benefits are obvious, but so are the limitations. The benefits are that they are exposing Gifu to a wider audience within the Prefecture and thus trying to create new fans. The downside is that they lose some kind of “home advantage” as it will be an unknown stadium for most of these players. Also, the capacity is lower and you are still quite far from the pitch.
Still, it should be a hotly contested game, so hopefully some fans will be born. Viva Ogaki!
