Another costly defeat, in more ways than one as Gifu went down against promotion chasing JEF United on Saturday night.
FC Gifu starting XI: Ota, Abe, Takagi, Okane, Fuji, Henik, Ono, Takachi, Rodrigo, Namba, Leo Mineiro
Gifu made a very bright start, controlling possession and looking dangerous, and they deservedly took the lead in the 13th minute. A fine cross from Yuto Ono found Hiroaki Namba in the box, and the division’s top scorer planted his header into the bottom corner. Namba really should have made it two nil as a superb Masanori Abe cross found him alone in the area, but he couldn’t keep his header down. It was a miss that Gifu would regret as JEF equalized right on half time. A corner from the left from Taisuke Nakamura was met by Kim Hun Hyun, who had escaped the attention of Takagi and his header beat Gakuji Ota.
That goal scarred Gifu, and as JEF stepped up their play in the second half it was no surprise to see them take the lead. Three minutes into the half, a cross from the right from Morimoto wasn’t really dealt with and the ball fell to Machida, and his sweet half volley arced past Ota and into the far corner. The hosts made sure of the game in the 62nd minute as Nejc Pecnik profited from some slack marking to slot in his 8th goal of the campaign.
This defeat was made much worse as injuries to Keiji Takachi & Leo Mineiro forced them off. If they were to miss any length of time it would pose a serious problem for the team.
The club don’t have much time to ponder their perilous position as Tokyo Verdy come to Gifu on Wednesday night. We owe them one after the now infamous comeback from Verdy earlier in the season.
